The Guru Granth Sahib is the central religious scripture of Sikhism, regarded by Sikhs as the final, sovereign, and eternal living Guru. It is a compilation of hymns and writings by the Sikh Gurus and other saints from different backgrounds, emphasizing spiritual teachings, devotion to God, and the principles of truth, compassion, humility, and love.
The Guru Granth Sahib is a unique scripture as it includes writings from multiple authors. It contains hymns composed by six Sikh Gurus (Guru Nanak, Guru Angad, Guru Amar Das, Guru Ram Das, Guru Arjan, and Guru Tegh Bahadur), fifteen Bhagats (holy men from various religious backgrounds), eleven Bhatts (bards), and four Gursikhs.
The first version, known as the Adi Granth, was compiled by the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan, in 1604. Later, the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, added his father's hymns and one of his own compositions before declaring it the eternal Guru of the Sikhs.
